“In particular, the emerging dominance of specialty drugs has had a major influence on pharmacy benefit managers and payers,” Nick says. “From less than 30 specialty drugs 25 years ago to 400+ today, the impact of costly specialty drugs on the pharmacy benefit plan is dramatic.” Today, with half of pharmacy costs driven by the 2% of patients taking specialty medications, programs that manage utilization while engaging patients and physicians are key to managing trend.

There’s never been a more important time emerged to make pharmacy benefits work harder and deliver more value. Patty adds, “What has not changed is that when patients get access to the right drugs, are supported by the right level of clinical intervention and adhere therapy, there is a positive impact on the overall cost of healthcare.”

Throughout the 25-year evolution of the PBM industry, WellDyne has successfully kept pharmacy costs low and quality of care high for its clients. Moving beyond the traditional PBM approach, the company leverages technology, data analytics, clinical programs and personalized member engagement to deliver lowest net cost and improve outcomes.
